$10 ART COLLECTOR

The $10 Art Collector is a fundraising initiative of the Queensland Centre for Photography, where participants have the chance to win a framed artwork by an established artist.

There are 1000 tickets for sale ($10 each). The funds from the initiative will be directed towards QCP programs, including the YoungBlood Editions project, supporting the development of emerging Queensland photomedia artists with a publication, an exhibition and to be short-listed for QCP’s international program.

The work to be acquired by the winner of the inaugural $10 Art Collector is a limited edition photograph by Marian Drew.

Born 1960 in Bundaberg, Drew is one of Australia’s most significant contemporary photographic artists. Drew’s practice, spanning more than twenty years, is characterised by innovation and exploration of photo-media. She is currently an Associate Professor at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.

Drew has held over 20 solo shows across Australia, United States, France and Germany and is currently represented by galleries in the United States and Australia. Her limited edition prints are in major public and private collections including the Australian National Gallery, Queensland Art Gallery, South Australian Art Gallery and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. In 1993, Drew was chosen to represent Australia in the First Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Queensland Art Gallery. Her work Lorikeet with Green Cloth was featured in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, in the exhibition In Focus: Still Life in September 2010.

QCP published Drew’s first monograph in 2006. Marian Drew – Photographs + Video works surveys her practice from 1983 to 2006 and contains texts by Dr. Caroline Jordan, Anne Kirker, Dr. Brigitta Olubas, Russel Storer and a foreword by internationally renowned art theoretician Geoffrey Batchen.

Marian Drew is donating the work Rainbow Lorikeet on Queensland Needlework 2009, from her series Still Life. The work measures 104 cm by 117 cm and is one of a limited edition of 10 archival pigment prints. This work was first exhibited at the QCP in 2009, and prints from the limited edition are held in the in the collections of the UQ Art Museum and the Gold Coast City Art Gallery.

Drew’s Still Life series connects the historical to the contemporary through replacing the tradition of oil paint with the photographic. What historically represents opulence and fertility is replaced with Australian road-kill, raising questions concerning waste, life and death. Drew emphasizes the significance of history in the present, and the strong relationship between painting and photography.

The series draws on familiar national icons and uses them to critique domestic consumption and habitat encroachment while also acknowledging the relationship between the individual and the animals contained within the images. The use of painterly conventions within the medium of photography also imbues a sense of history and gravity to the work. So too the rituals associated with food preparation and table setting, revealing a new connection between our domestic life and that of the cohabitating animals sacrificed in the name of progress.

The closing date for $10 Art Collector is Saturday 3 December 2011 at 6.30pm, when the winners will be drawn at the QCP’s last exhibition opening for 2011. In addition to the first prize, there will be two runner-up prizes of a QCP book pack comprising QCP’s six monographs of the work of Marian Drew, Ray Cook, Martin Smith, Joachim Froese, Renata Buziak and Peter Milne.
