One, Two, Three, Kimchi

Artist Statement
The photographic series, One, Two, Three, Kimchi, documents the year I spent in South Korea. My interest as a traveller has been to observe the differences of body language and physical communication in cultures. The portraits within the series focus on the gestures that occur around sites of tourism and the public displays that are affected in front of a camera. The exhibition title comes from the Korean version of the blurb most commonly yelled out when posing for a snapshot: One, Two, Three, Cheese!
While not obviously so, many of the portraits have taken advantage of a stranger posing for a friend’s camera, where I have taken the shot from behind the photographer. Consequently the subjects, who are clearly posing, are never quite gazing into the camera. This process draws attention to small moments of transition in a person’s body language, as they shift between conscious and unconscious postures.
