Order of Magnitude (VIC)

The mobile phone is a ubiquitous, ever-present communication tool that has become an extension of the self; its camera a third eye capturing the ephemera of the everyday.

In this mega-pixel era, these 4 artists celebrate the possibilities afforded by the parameters of the mobile phone camera. An Order of Magnitude refers to these small low-res images being reproduced in ways not intended by the makers of the cameras.

The extreme enlargement of these mobile phone photographs transforms these images of public spaces into a poetic and evocative memorialisation of place.

The subject matter is recognisable, yet nothing is direct: all is devoid of artifice. Each photograph stands at times somnolent and evasive, a passing glance of memory and forgetting, a deceptive realism.
