Going Home by Lucy Ransome
I have long been interested in domestic spaces, particularly houses, both in terms of their structural function (as shelter) and their spiritual and emotional function (as home).
As writer Simone de Beauvoir has said: ‘The ideal of happiness has always taken material form in the house, whether cottage or castle; it stands for permanence and separation from the world’.
This video installation explores the contradiction between the perceived permanence and security of the house and the actual fragile and fleeting nature of home.
The powerful sense of place attached to our home or homeland helps shape our identities and leaving it behind can lead to a sense of displacement and yearning, with ‘home’ often becoming idealised through nostalgia.
