Transience by Julie Stephenson (QLD)
Transience have a meditative quality and exude an element of mystery. Julie Stephenson has photographed a vortex in water, and use shape and form to explore transformation. She realised that it is the air that creates and sustains the form of the vortex, and the analogy between the vortex and the human form became apparent. The shapes are dynamic and voluptuous, yet have an element of serenity. They range from imbuing strength and appear more like glass than water, to encompassing an ephemeral quality. The broad range of images suggests impermanence and transience. Each photograph, a representation of a stage of the vortex, evokes a response that she has explored in relation to the human condition and the transient nature of life. These abstract images of paused moments suggest there is far more which is unseen. It is this that triggers the reflective nature of her work.
