Biochromes by Renata Monika Buziak
Nature can be physically and spiritually rejuvenating and has been the main inspiration for my artwork. My current project focuses on the process of organic decomposition and its effects on photographic materials. Biochromes created by this process are formed from the colours of natural, microscopic pigments.
Without using a camera the images are records of ‘photographic’ transformation and representation of reality. Focus here is on the process of making of the art work, which involves letting nature show us its own ability of designing often unpredictable complex patterns, shapes and colours, which depend on the materials used, the conditions provided, the type of bacteria and time allowed for the development. Collaboration with nature and a trust in chance invigorates my art practice.
The ‘Biochromes’ project involves a process in which I use various plants with which to cover the photographic materials, to create an environment for the bacteria to develop and decomposition to occur. At a specific time I stop this organic process and record the effects it has on the photographic materials, which transcend the visual expectations. Preserving one of various stages of decomposition, as an image of beautiful plant decay, encourages appreciation for all the elements and processes of nature otherwise unnoticed, and draws our attention to the cycle of decay and renewal.
