'White Cube' by Stewart Service
WHITE CUBE is an installation that grew out of my disaster management photographs with the cube being a metaphor for our increasing retreat into virtual worlds that are clean and sanitized and that increasingly shut out environmental threats. It references Baudrillard writings on the virtual world in which we live much of our lives and how constructed is our sense of reality. The use of plastic sheeting grew out of the use of this material as protection against nuclear contamination at Fukishima and the disturbing ineffectiveness of the response to this disaster. The installation began as a series of photographs but has developed into a video.
