'On Futility' by Liam O'Brien
On Futility forms the video component of a multidisciplinary exploration into the inescapable and restrictive nature of employment, and mankind’s desires for liberation and freedom from this system.
In all forms of this exploration, a typified character of the corporate working-class struggles to free himself from the purgatorial bind of employment.
In the photographic component, the character’s movements are frozen by the camera, causing a questioning of control through the creation of ambiguity. In the performance component, repetitious self-flagellation causes a gut-wrenching response through the immediacy of the action. The video component, however, operates between these two mediums. While the movements of the character are captured in their entirety, the critical distance of the viewer, as caused by the camera, results in an almost humorous absurdity. This sense of absurdity is compounded by the ever-passing traffic and sounds of barking neighborhood dogs, both of which ground the video in a specific location of suburban reality.
The result of this multidisciplinary exploration was the creation of three similar pieces of work, which through the differing strengths and weaknesses of medium, communicate the same idea in very different ways.
Regardless of medium, these explorations invite the viewer to consider their own commitment, desires, and personal freedoms.
