'Beast' by Rebecca Smith
When I was thirteen I attended a religious school, and each morning was read by my English teacher the Biblical book of Revelation. At this time my belief in religion was waning, however not enough to avoid being fascinated and terrified by his interpretation of this apocalyptic myth. We will be barcoded by order of the Antichrist, we were told in good authority, and the seas will turn to blood.
This series is concerned with this "pre-apocalyptic" way of seeing the world-- the search for signs and prophecy in the everyday, the belief in a sinister heart within the machinations of society. I have used the banal landscapes of my adolescence to respond to this element of my upbringing, suggesting a narrative of a wild and condemned world.
