'My Song' by Hiroaki Eba
Thirty-two years ago in Tokyo, I became a florist. I became involved in floral art. Through working with flowers as an art form, I learned about colour, shape, and balance.
It was about the same time I first heard Keith Jarrett's "Köln Concert" – jazz piano improvisation I can only describe as a miracle. Dramatic, ephemeral and beautiful, ‘Part One’ seemed to speak to me of life in its many shades. I remember listening to it over and over again.
Since then I have listened much to music on the German recording label ECM, particularly works by Keith Jarrett. Wherever I might be, however fatigued I might feel, musicians on the ECM label have never failed to take me into another world – a world of space and freedom. I am both proud and deeply grateful the experience has become part of my life.
This personal exhibition is an attempt to give visual form to what I have felt through music. It has developed out of gratitude and respect for the works of great musicians. The title of the exhibition – "My Song" – was borrowed from music by Keith Jarrett.
