'Deity Supreme' by Ria Tierney

Artist statement

Deity Supreme
This body of work explores ideas of iconic representation and interpretive portraiture. The underlying intention is to investigate how people relate to iconic figures and provide an alternative record of depiction. I was interested in developing these different aspects of memorabilia from the archival documents, mythologies, through to the lasting obsession of the fanatical fan.

Biography
Ria Tierney is a recent graduate (2009) of Queensland College of Art, where she studied photography and printmaking. Her work often sits between social documentary and photographic art practice, most noticeably 2 Percent: The Redhead Collection, a series of portraits of natural redheads of all shapes and sizes which was exhibited at QCP in 2007.
During 2008 Ria undertook an exchange program to the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland, where she began producing artist books, including Ria and the Castle, a photographic series in which she collaborated with foreign tourist in and around Edinburgh Castle and Travel Strip 1, a documentation of a Brighton to Edinburgh train trip.
As an emerging practitioner Ria has exhibited in many shows in Brisbane, including most recently Concrete, an installation exhibition at Substation 5, Paddington (2009) and Portraits, a group show at The Big Time gallery, Drake in Northern NSW. In Late 2009 she received the Artworkers Alliance Award for a graduating photography portfolio, Deity Supreme, which started off her work that revolved around the life and times of Elvis Presley and that of his fanatical fans.
