'Texture of Breath' by Wendy Meyers
Texture of Breath explores the poetics of space and time through the creation of miniature sculptural landscapes, loosely formed, and set adrift into the darkness. I consider the infinite through the infinitesimal, drawing on the metaphor of darkness and light to help underpin a sense of the fundamental. The process of abstraction allows me to use the unique qualities of gauze, which is structural yet malleable, to investigate notions of transience and transformation, essence and existence, and the interconnected nature of the universe at a microscopic level. Gauze swabs become sites of transition into the ambiguous realm of metaphysical expression. Gauze, however, has associations with the body, and this association prevents a complete departure from the concrete world into the abstract. Gauze breathes in order to heal, and we are reminded that life is physical, fragile and transient.
