'Too many times in Darwin' by Philippe Schneider
Philippe Schneider's images of Darwin provide a counterpoint to the photographs of the holidaymaker; in some ways they become the antithesis of the touristic snapshot. Vacant of any romanticism, nostalgia or expectation these images are a reflection of the vicissitudes of life as Schneider found him self unexpectedly removed from family and friends in an environment void of personal purpose and social conditioning. This lack of attachment to a prescribed notion of place imbeds these works with a sense of emotional and social honesty, they capture with new eyes the uncharacteristic life of a small Australian city, the cultural solitude of the urban space and they help us to reflect on our own sense of social displacement in contemporary life.
