'Between - the - Flags' by Siegfried Manietta

The genesis of this work can be traced back to late 1970’s when I was engaged to photograph a large scale pen-and-ink work by Colin Lanceley titled Waiting for the Dalai Lama. I was fascinated by its glaring visual reference to Australian beach culture: small patches of intense colour separated by orderly spaces on a flat field.

The beach is a place deeply embedded in the Australian psyche; a place of recreation, a place people colonize, abandon and re-colonize daily. Catching an extended time through the medium of photography illuminates the fascinating and complex relationships between people as they move through time within a given space.

However the true magic of photography commands that its images, like poetry, always ask more questions than they answer: who owns that thong? What happened to the ethereal figure? Where are the bathers?

I would like to acknowledge Surf Lifesaving Club Members for their kind assistance in the production of this work.
