'Other Worlds' by Beverley Southcott (NSW)
The Other Worlds photo media series further addresses Beverley Southcott’s on going research of the contemporary urban sublime that can co exist within the everyday and the urban environment. This is where seemingly ordinary mundane spaces can be transformed into a sense of the unworldly and a type of otherness by re-viewing and re-seeing these external environments differently. In this series these newly discovered encapsulated, microscopic illuminated worlds are portrayed as strangely mysterious and random within a much larger ‘via negativa’ cosmic space.
These images were taken from the Sydney Tower’s observatory level. A camera obscura effect was created of the buildings and street scenes observed below by using a ‘shoot and point’ high quality camera held against the lens of the ‘fixed’ viewing binoculars.
Beverley Southcott is a mid career artist, who has participated in exhibitions internationally, nationally and in South Australia that included photography, painting and installation.
Southcott’s recent work has been selected and included for major Australian art awards and competitions.
Her theoretical on going research is primarily within relevant contemporary art theory, cultural and theological studies that include these subject matters: the 19th century and the post modern sublime; the urban city environment; surveillance; consumerism; globalisation and post industrialism.
