Wendy Meyers

Wendy Meyers is a Brisbane based visual artist who integrates photography, mixed media installations and sculpture within her studio practice. Her work explores the universal, the inevitable and the essential elements of human experience – life, death, consciousness, space, time, transience and transformation. These concerns form a common thread in a practice which seeks to exploit the ambiguity of visual abstraction in order to penetrate the possible shapes and enigmatic traces of the mysterious, the indefinable and the indescribable. An appreciation of the quality of light, with its ability to transform objects both visually and ideologically, provides a unifying component within her work. The intersection of light, form, shadow, space and time allows metaphors of darkness and light to be engendered, and facilitates the development of themes within a philosophical, contemplative aesthetic.

Her photographic series The Texture of Breath explores the poetics of space and time through the creation of miniature sculptural landscapes, loosely formed, and set adrift into the darkness. The infinite is considered through the infinitesimal, and the metaphor of darkness and light is drawn upon to help underpin a sense of the fundamental. The unique qualities of gauze, which is structural yet malleable, are employed to investigate notions of transience and transformation, essence and existence, and the interconnected nature of the universe at a microscopic level. Gauze swabs become sites of transition into the ambiguous realm of metaphysical expression. Gauze, however, has associations with the body, and this association prevents a complete departure from the concrete world into the abstract. Gauze breathes in order to heal, and we are reminded that life is physical, fragile and transient.
