'Play Dead' is a series of ghostly ‘in-camera’ long exposure photographs taken at 2 A.M. on the remote West Coast of New Zealand.
In an eerie pre-emption of a tragedy that was yet to take place we unwittingly gravitated toward these poses.
Two nights later a mystery began to unfold, which will haunt this town for years to come…
A young woman was murdered in the same place where we’d decided to ‘play dead’.
'The Illustrated Scientologist'
In the same way that the “stations of the cross” provide a visual access point to the characters and stories of the Catholic religion, this distinctive photographic series attempts to illustrate the mysterious folklore surrounding the religion of Scientology.
Using the science fiction imagery evoked by founder L. Ron Hubbard, as well as his arcane vocabulary in the titles of the work, these images can merely speculate about the closely guarded secrets buried within the hierarchy of their teachings.
All the photos are long exposure stills employing a ‘painting with torch light’ technique to literally ‘draw’ onto the exposure. As the picture is being taken I am actually walking through it with torches, or relying on moonlight to expose only what it is that I want the audience to see.
