OVERVIEW
Founded in 2003, the Queensland Centre for Photography (QCP) is an artist-run, not-for-profit institution, promoting Queensland photo-media artists through a program of exhibitions, educational presentations, publications, international activities and the Queensland Festival of Photography. These programs focus on the creation of sustainable careers for photographic artists while delivering cultural activities for the benefit of the general community.
Developing cultural prestige and recognition for state-based photo-media artists by directing our efforts to interest groups such as curators, collectors, academics, commercial galleries, and the arts media; the QCP generates new national and international opportunities including exhibitions, reviews and commissions, generating new markets and providing greater exposure for Queensland artists.
By fostering international exchange the public benefit from a progressive and maturing local arts scene while having access to thought-provoking exhibitions of international and national artists.
PROGRAMS
EXHIBITIONS
The QCP has one of the most exciting and fast paced photo-media exhibitions programs in Australia, positioning Queensland at the forefront of national developments in the art form.
The QCP showcases around 60 solo shows in ten exhibition periods per year, with growing attendances and a faithful community of supporters. The staggering breadth of exhibitions - over 200 individual shows since May 2004 - has given public access to the best photography has to offer in Queensland and Australia.
A favourite of graduates and academics, the QCP’s relocation to South Bank has extended the benefit of our exhibition program while providing a more suitable educational venue for students and public alike.
PUBLICATIONS
Since 2005, with the publication of its first book, the QCP has become the most important state-based provider of educational resources in the field. For the first time students, academics and the general public can benefit from high quality publications while providing an international platform for Queensland art.
QCP’s exhibition catalogues and monographs set national benchmarks in their field.
With a large presence in the arts media through advertising, editorials and reviews, QCP sponsors have access to a prestigious demographic through magazines such as Art in Australia, Photofile, Eyeline and Broadsheet.
The QCP website is a major gateway for national and international audiences, with one of the most comprehensive databases on Australian photography. The portal provides an exceptional platform for sponsors looking to expand their target audience. QCP also has a growing presence on Facebook and Twitter.
INTERNATIONAL
In 2006, due to the national success of Queensland photographers and the growing international profile of Brisbane, the QCP initiated a program aimed to promote local photographic artists in the American and European markets.
With great success at international art fairs such as Photo Los Angeles the QCP has placed Queensland photographic artists ahead of its counterparts in New South Wales and Victoria. This effort has given local artists a never-before-seen access to galleries and institutions nationwide.
This competitive edge requires a matching venue for the general public, international visitors, collectors and artists as Brisbane positions itself as a significant cultural and contemporary art location within the national and global arts scene.
QUEENSLAND FESTIVAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY
The Third Queensland Festival of Photography in 2010 will again be one of the largest in Australia. With 20 institutions participating in 2008 from Cairns to Toowoomba, the festival capitalises on the public love for photography and the excellent resources in the state to bring a month of exceptional photographic exhibitions, seminars and artist talks.
COLLECTION
In 2004 the Queensland Centre for Photography began collecting important pieces of photographic artwork from established and emerging photographers. Primarily containing Australian and Queensland photographic art, our new venue at South Bank will ensure professional gallery standards and archival storage facilities to protect these works for present and future use.
In the longer term, items from the collection will be able to be leased or loaned to other art institutions, corporations, and sponsors throughout Australia and overseas, increasing the profile of Australian and Queensland Art.
VENUE
LOCATION
The QCP’s new location at the SW1 development at the corner of Cordelia and Russell streets in South Bank brings to this thriving precinct one of the most accomplished national institutions in the sector while providing a public avenue for the enjoyment of the photographic arts.
With two of Queensland’s key art educational institutions in the vicinity and the cultural hub of South Bank, the QCP provides a much-needed space for local practitioners while strengthening the educational programs of TAFE and Griffith University.
By capitalising on the organisation’s already established national and international presence, Queensland are now able to match the commitment made by cities such as Sydney with the Australian Centre for Photography and Melbourne with the Centre for Contemporary Photography.
The placement of the QCP functions as a major cultural connection between the Queensland College of Art, TAFE and The Gallery of Modern Art, making it central to the life of the area and increasing public contact for sponsors hoping to invest in the cultural fabric of the city, its inhabitants and future developments.
With its state-of-the-art facilities, the QCP provides a sophisticated and stylish setting for intimate or large gatherings for corporations interested in sponsoring the institution and its activities.
GALLERIES
In a building designed by award-winning architectural firm Allen Jack+Cottier, the 220m² two level purpose-built space comprises 7 galleries (including a multi-use, high-tech video projection room/gallery), storage facilities and offices. These facilities allows the QCP to hold prestigious travelling shows while uplifting the appreciation the general public has of the great achievements of local artists.
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Sponsoring the QCP is an effective way to support the practice of artists. Sponsors can do this in several ways, for examples sponsoring a single exhibtion (which usually showcases up to seven artists), sponsoring a room (which will showcase 10 artists in a year), or supporting other projects. QCP has developed a points system for sponsor benefits to enable each sponsor to target the benefits that suit them best.
The rent of the QCP gallery is paid by the artist and sponsors, so any contribution by sponsors is a direct benefit to the artists.
